Ed Lay Bio

Ed Lay wiki

Edward Owen Lay (commonly known as Ed Lay or Edward Lay, born February 20, 1981, in Ipswich, United Kingdom) is a British musician and drummer for the Birmingham-based indie rock band Editors who rose to fame after the 2005 release of their debut album The Back Room.

Early Life & Career

A native of Ipswich, Lay used to play drums in various local bands since he was a teenager. Lay played drum in a marching band at a young age and got into drums through a school friend. Lay was a student of the Music Technology Program at Staffordshire University, where he met with his band members of Editors. Lay joined the Editors, who were then known as The Pride. After graduation, the band moved into a house in Birmingham in autumn 2003 and aimed at a career as a professional musician.

Although often named as a member of the band from the very beginning, Ed Lay replaced Geraint Owen (who now plays drums for the Welsh band The Heights) as a drummer at an early stage in the band's history. Ed Lay made his live debut with the band in March 2003, with the new line-up they initially operated under the name Snowfield.

Albeit Editors were gaining musical popularity, the band members held odd jobs. Lay used to work in a shoe store with Editors' guitarist Chris Urbanowicz. While the band took shape in 2004, the band members gave up their respective part-time jobs in order to devote themselves entirely to music.

Instruments

Ed Lay plays Zildjian and Sonor instruments. He can also be heard occasionally in the background vocals, on the “In Dream” tour he showed up on the synthesizer at the start of the show.
