And God Created Woman (1956)

Roger Vadim's erotic drama about a sexually liberated orphan wasn't the first to star Brigitte Bardot, but it was the one that made her a household name at the time, a defining "sex kitten."

Without explicit nudity (which was illegal then), And God Created Woman was so divisive that law enforcement raided some US screenings. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the forbidden fruit was a box-office success.

Beach Rats (2017)

Eliza Hittman's second film, which won a Sundance Award, is a piercing, depressing character study of an aimless Brooklyn teen who wrestles with his sexual identity as his father becomes ill. Harris Dickinson, who portrays Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, is a stunning beauty with sculpted, soft-featured ginger hair; you'll be surprised to learn that he's British when you hear his New York accent. In Beach Rats, there is a ton of candid nudity, and Hittman's camera makes the most of Dickinson's amazing physique.

Nightmare Alley (2021)

It's only fitting that Guillermo del Toro would create the most brilliantly bloody pure noir movie in decades.

Bradley Cooper's lack of an Academy Award is somewhat scandalous, but he is very likely to receive another nomination for Best Actor for his performance here as a master manipulator who is paired with a seductive psychologist (Cate Blanchett).

Nightmare Alley is obscene and pulpy; it has no desire to go beyond its genre. That's most likely a plus.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989)

Pedro Almodóvar's uncanny blend of romantic comedy and horror film was so divisive that it went to court. Miramax sued the MPAA for assigning an X rating to Tie Me Up! (generally reserved for porn).

Tie Me Up! was released unrated and grossed a respectable amount for a foreign film; one year later, the NC-17 rating was introduced.

Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction (2006)

Paul Verhoeven's iconic 1992 thriller about a dupe who falls for a murderous bombshell starred Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. The original was a massive box-office success, making Stone a household name and grossing over $352 million (nearly $700 million today).

The long-awaited sequel ups the sleaze and lowers the already-low IQ, but it's a nudity-filled, thimble-brained, violent good time if you're in the right mood.

Looking: The Movie (2016)

Andrew Haigh's subtle, insightful look at three gay BFFs in the Bay Area was on the verge of greatness when it was canceled after two seasons.

HBO did, however, approve a two-hour special event to neatly tie up loose ends. Looking still has a devoted following; perhaps one day we'll see an HBO Max revival. With the recently announced Sex and the City revival series, such a thing appears more believable than ever.

Magic Mike XXL (2015)

The sequel is just as beefy and well-oiled as the first. Mike returns to Myrtle Beach for a stripper convention three years after retiring. XXL includes a game starring Jada Pinkett Smith, and it, like its predecessor, was a critical and commercial success.

Behind the Candelabra (2013)

Soderbergh's glossy-yet-gritty, delectably soapy biopic of Liberace (Michael Douglas) and lover Scott Thurston (Matt Damon) was a massive success for HBO, winning 11 Emmys and two Golden Globes in addition to widespread critical acclaim. It had its world premiere at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Chicago (2002)

This Broadway-to-film adaptation was the first musical to win Best Picture in 34 years and for good reason.

Chicago is an unabashed Hollywood production where the star-studded cast of Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly doesn't so much disappear into roles like the murderous Roxie Hart or the manipulative Billy Flynn as it does completely own them.

A good movie to watch in the background while listening to music, but also one to sit down and enjoy. "Pop, six, squish, uh-uh, Cicero, Lipschitz," baby!

The Notebook (2004)

The timeless quality of this Nicholas Sparks classic is summed up in a straightforward declaration of devotion. The movie, which made Ryan Gosling an instant heartthrob, followed the lovelorn relationship between Noah, a working-class character, and Allie, a wealthy character, played by Rachel McAdam.

Even the most pessimistic of us can't help but swoon at the idea of star-crossed lovers, and when their tale is told by an elderly man reading a notebook to a woman suffering from dementia (you guessed it!), you can't help but melt.

This is a love story for the ages thanks to Noah's resolve to follow his heart as well as their passionate kiss in the rain.
