Are atheists usually liberal or conservative? Well, usually they're liberal. So, in America, they're usually Democrats.
And the reason is, when it comes to the social issues on-- like gay marriage, like abortion, women's rights, usually they're on the side with the Democrats.
I mean, they're for gay marriage. And the Republicans in large part right now are still against it. And not only are they against it.
When they explain why they're against it, it's for religious reasons. You know, the Bible says it's got to be one man and one woman.
It's like, "Well, if you discard the Bible and you don't accept the Bible as-- as this book of truth, what other option do you have?
You go on the side of equality. And when it comes to women's rights, why is abortion wrong? Most atheists will say, "Well, it's-- It's not just about abortion, it's about what that woman wants, and should you give her the autonomy to make those decisions for herself.
And the people who tend to be pro-life are usually pro-life for religious reasons. And again, there are exceptions to this rule. There are atheists who are pro-life.
There are very few atheists who are against gay marriage, and they might have non-religious reasons for explaining that. But by and large, the atheists are liberal.
And what's amazing to me is we know, for example, most Christians are conservative. We know most Christians are Republicans and the GOP knows this.
So, they tap into that base. They-- They speak at churches, for example. -- That happens -- But they make sure that those people in the churches are out voting for them on Election Day.
And politically speaking, that's a good strategy. That's what you probably should be doing. But what I don't get is how, you know, as much as atheists, as much as religious "nones", the unaffiliated, as much as we are Democrats, the Democrats have not tapped into us as a voting bloc.
Maybe because they're afraid of us. Maybe they don't want to be affiliated with us in any way, but they really haven't done a lot of outreach.
Because we're this huge voting bloc and we're not going to vote one way just because, you know, a pastor tells us to vote that way, or because some politician wants our votes and they just want to pander to us. But most of us already agree with most Democrats on a lot of social issues.
So, it's unbelievable to me that they haven't reached out to us in any significant way. They still haven't. It's like it's 2013 and they still haven't reached out to us. Probably because they're afraid that their opponents are going to use that linkage like, "Oh, this politician talks to atheists!
Don't vote for him or her." Get over that and do it, because once you start doing it, if anyone attacks you for doing it, we're gonna go right back at them. So, that's just unbelievable, that they haven't seen that as a politically strategic thing to do.
Now, I've been talking a lot about social issues, on economic issues where, you know, Democrats and Republicans have some differences, I've heard atheists go all different ways. It's not like most atheists are Democrats when it comes to economic policies, necessarily.
Some of them are fiscally conservative. Some of them are very libertarian when they go about this stuff. So, on those other issues, I wouldn't say atheists go one way or the other.
On the social issues, which are the probably-- the easiest ones to get people to vote on, like, "Oh, if gay marriage means something to you, go out to the ballot on this day.
We're all pretty liberal. And again, it's just unbelievable Democrats haven't recognized that yet.
